DR. Joseph Kappes
Chief Instructor, JKR Missouri, USA
Professional Credentials & Positions:
Along with my private clinical practice I have served on a number of State, Regional & National Boards in various positions involving examining doctoral candidates, certifying post-doctoral credentialling, teaching continuing medical education and serving on administrative boards associated with accreditation and medical standards of practice. I have also been involved in establishing undergraduate curricular standards and I created a new clinical biomechanics department at one medical school. On a few occasions I have testified before Congress/Senate as an expert witness on various health care, credentialling and medical standards issues.
Karate Credentials & Experience
I have been training almost 40 years, (25 years with JKA Shotokan organizations [Okazaki, Nishiyama, Dalke, Safar], 5 years with SKA Shotokai [Ohshima, Honda], 10 years with JKR)
In my earlier years I was sent to various JKA senior instructors for short term (summer) training apprenticeships (or to be "fresh meat" for their competitors & instructor candidates?).
In the 1970s I attended the JKA-US/ISKF Instructors Program (3 years) and the predecessor to the Long Island University's Karate Instructor Program & I assisted Okazaki Sensei & Dr. Stricevic with their research on karate athletes (both as an athlete & as a research assistent).
In the 1970s I competed at various levels in Kumite & Kata with the JKA-US, AAKF, ISKF & AAU
In 1975 I won 1st Place in Kata & 3rd in Kumite & was selected as the Outstanding Competitor for the Eastern US - at the 1975 JKA-US Championships. I also competed on the JKA-US East Coast Team (as Captain) at several state, regional, collegiate & military academy tournaments (we were undefeated in both Kumite & Kata the 3 years I served as captain).
In the 1970s I helped write, teach & impliment training methods for tactical defense & riot control for members of the Tactical Force of the Camden Police Department (before SWAT teams were developed)
I have taught karate in numerous settings. (established dojos, colleges, universities, training camps, seminars, etc.).
I have served as the primary "official examiner" grading up through sandan in various JKA organizations & on panels up through rokudan.
I have several dozen former students who have reached various dan grades and several are currently active high yudansha grades in various organizations.
I maintain a small private dojo with a few long-term students.
I believe I have varied experiences with multiple karatedo organizations that may be beneficial in helping our organization develop and impliment a "world class" Instructor's Program... I believe I also have sufficient experience to help establish & impliment yudansha standards & testing up into the senior grades. I also have professional credentials & experience to serve on the medical committee and to tie this all together I think that I can help establish a Shihankai & Yudanshakai that will support, promote and protect Sensei's vision and legacy.
